There are two types of news – these are 'hard' and 'soft' news. Hard News is another term for
serious
news. Soft News is news that is deemed to be
less serious. Both
Hard and Soft news are
important considerations for any news institution – they
have to consider WHAT to include and
WHEN to include it. Different types of news stories include: Business news, Human interest stories,
Entertainment, Sport, War, Politics, Celebrity, Foreign affairs, Disasters and Fashion. You will
need to be able to distinguish between which of these stories are classed as 'hard' or 'soft' news.
Hard News: Business news, War, Politics, Foreign affairs, Disasters
Soft News: Human interest stories, Entertainment, Sport, Celebrity, Fashion
Hard
News will refer to ‘up to the minute’ news and events that are reported
immediately after it takes
place. This
will include economics, politics, war and crime. The
term usually refers to the news that is
very serious and considered to be
urgent. Watch this clip from the September 11th news coverage
how is the way it is reported, suggest that it is 'urgent' news?
Hard
news is more serious, whereas soft news does not take a serious tone at all. A
hard news story
will take a factual approach and consider: What happened? Who did it involve? Where and when
did it happen? Why did it happen?
A
soft news story will try to entertain or advise the audience. It
may relate to gossip about celebrities of
interest, fashion tips, new releases
of technology etc. Soft
news are usually of human interest. Key
Point: The tone of the presentation
of a story is a key difference between soft and hard news.
