News Values

News values refer to the general guidelines or criteria that are used by media producers. They use these guidelines to determine how much prominence of importance to give to a news story. It is important to condor that 'negative' news is what audiences are interested in. It is increasingly likely that negative news will appear earlier in the running order of a news broadcast when compared to 'soft' news stories. Some of the common news values include:

  • Immediacy - has it happened recently?
  • Familiarity - does it mean something to us in Britain?
  • Amplitude - is it a big event?
  • Predictability - do we expect it to happen?
  • Frequency - is it something that happened fairly quickly?
  • Unambiguity - is t clear? Are the results / effects obvious?
  • Surprise - is it a rare or unexpected event?
  • Continuity - has it already been defined as news?
  • Elite nations or persons - which country? Does it involve well-known people?
  • Personalisation - is it personal or a human interest story?
  • Negativity - is it bad news?
  • Balance - is it a home news story used to balance coverage of foreign news?
