Media Language - Narrative

Narrative refers to the order of an events and this can be applied to all media texts, including news broadcasts. Audiences like to see story lines / events resolved, but this is not always the case, just look at the reporting of the 'ebola virus'. This is an ongoing storyline and there is yet to be a resolution.
In relation to the narrative of a news story, there will be an introduction/opening and in many cases, there will be a resolution to the storyline. Some news reports ail provide elements of enigma, which broadcasts an element of mystery and asks questions. The narrative of a news story will provide a cause  and effect - this is known as 'causality'. News reports will also create tension and suspense as well as a level of expectation. They will feature 'typical' characters that we often see in media texts - in some cases, the hero or villain who are involved in some sort of quest. News stories fit our generic expectations as they are presented as having a beginning, a disequilibrium and an ending.
